IRELAND

Ballymaloe House, County Cork

with Dr. Betsy Rippentrop

September 24-30, 2023

Join Dr. Betsy Rippentrop for an unforgettable yoga retreat in mystical, magical Ireland!

This retreat is happening at an extremely auspicious time of year as we have just moved through the Fall Equinox and the days are getting shorter.  This is a time of year to begin to draw our awareness inward, and this retreat will help you slow down, drink in the beauty of the outer landscape and be guided into the beauty of your inner landscape.

Our theme for the week is beauty.   The great Irish poet John O’Donohue believed humans hunger for beauty and feel most alive in the presence of what is beautiful.  This pristine location tucked into the rolling hills of Cork is filled with exquisite beauty.  O’Donohue writes that “beauty returns us, often in fleeting but sustaining moments to our highest selves.”

If you are needing a reprieve from the fast pace of modern life and a deeper connection to yourself, come join Dr. Betsy on this Irish retreat on the exploration of the beauty around and within.  It will fill you up and help you make a conscious transition into the Fall and Winter bringing a deeper reverence for the still spaces within.

Vacation Details

Your retreat week will be at the award winning Ballymaloe House. Tucked into the quiet Cork countryside and complete with farm, pristine gardens, artists residency and a world renowned cookery school, your days will include morning and afternoon yoga classes, farm to table meals, strolling the property, picnicking on the Ballycotton cliffs and more. You’ll enjoy a day trip to Blarney castle with a special dinner out, and have the opportunity  to visit the Jameson distillery or enjoy a tour of the Ballymaloe Cookery School.  This special retreat is an experience of all of the splendors of Ireland and is perfect for single travelers, couples, culinary enthusiasts and everything in between.

Condé Nast Traveller Magazine has acknowledged Ballymaloe House on their Gold List, and it was the only Irish venue on this prestigious list of the World’s top 100 hotels. The McKenna Guide 2018 listed Ballymaloe House as one of Ireland’s 100 Best Restaurants.

Accommodation at Ballymaloe House is simple and elegant. Each room has a private bathroom (most with bathtubs!) where you will be treated to fresh bath salts for a nice soak. All accommodations have a calm and relaxing feel. There are paintings and drawings by Irish modern artists such as Pat Scott, Michael Farrell, Louis Le Brocquy and Norah McGuinness throughout the house as well as examples of Irish studio pottery.

Enjoy afternoon tea in the drawing room by the fire or in the conservatory filled with scented geraniums and winter jasmine looking out onto our gardens and river. Benches are dotted throughout the gardens for you to sit in summer and read or listen to the sounds of the farm. In winter the drawing room is warm and peaceful-the perfect place to relax after a long walk by the sea and look out at the wild Irish sky.

Yoga classes will be onsite at the “Grainstore” – originally built in the 17th century, but converted to host groups and events (including local yoga workshops).  Many of our meals will be catered for us here at the Grainstore, plus we’ve been invited to a special dinner at Ballymaloe House.

During our week, we’ll explore the surrounding area, have a picnic on the Bally cotton cliffs, visit Blarney Castle and more.

Travel, Additional Information & FAQ’s

Please plan to meet the group at Ballymaloe House on the start day of your retreat. Rooms will be available between 2 and 4pm. On the last day of your retreat, check out is after breakfast (so there will not be a yoga class on that day).

The closest airport to Ballymaloe House is Cork international (ORK) which is about 30 minutes via taxi or car. The other major airports in Ireland are Dublin (3 hour drive) and Shannon (2 hour drive). We anticipate that some participants will add time before or after the retreat to explore and some may choose to fly into an Dublin or Shannon, rent a car or take other transportation, for example hiring a private driver service to get to Cork and then to our retreat home at Ballymaloe.

There is so much beauty worth exploring if you have any extra time to add. In the past, some have added time in Dublin, while others have ventured from Cork to Killarney, the ring of Kerry, Dingle and other gems.  Kinsale is also a lovely village not far from Cork.  So, a car rental may be worth it, especially if shared by a friend or two (to share the cost) …  but don’t forget – the Irish drive on the left!

We will start gathering participants travel plans well in advance, and certainly if we see many on similar flights arriving to the Cork Airport, we may be able to connect those of you on similar arrivals if you want to hire a taxi bus as a group.  For transportation after the retreat (for example back to Cork airport), the receptionist at Ballymaloe can easily assist.

What to pack:

Your Teachers

Dr. Betsy Rippentrop

Dr. Rippentrop’s work is one of integration – the blending of science, yoga, psychology, spirituality, and esoteric healing traditions.  Doctoral training in counseling psychology at the University of Iowa provided Dr. Rippentrop a strong foundational understanding of mental health, research methodology, and the practice of psychotherapy.  She has specialty training in pain management, sleep disorders, psychosocial oncology, and mind/body interventions for both physical and mental health. She completed her clinical internship at Rush Medical center in Chicago, and has worked in various departments within academic medical centers.  She has been in private practice for the past 17 years.

During her graduate studies, Dr. Rippentrop turned to yoga as a much needed respite from the stress of her work.  Her interest in yoga and its healing properties took root, leading to additional in-depth study of energy medicine, meditation, mindfulness, hypnosis, breath work, the chakra system, and mystical teachings.  She completed teacher training in the Anusara yoga method in 2008, and has completed over 500 hours of training in yoga with various teachers from different lineages including John Friend, Desiree Rumbaugh, and Angela Farmer.

Ireland was amazing! Everything was absolutely wonderful: beautiful land and accommodations, spectacular hosts, delicious food, fun day trips, nourishing yoga, fantastic community. It was bittersweet to leave, but I did so feeling completely replenished and full of joy. This was my perfect first solo traveling adventure.
